AIAA is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a professional society for Aerospace Engineering. The organization was founded in 1963 from the merger between the American Rocket Society and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences. AIAA has members across the world, dispite its name. AIAA hosts a variety of seminars and conventions, with various focuses.
AIAA is made up of seven regions, North-East, South-East, Central, South-Central, Mid-West, and International; These sections are subdivided into Sections. Student Sections of AIAA are often found at Universities with Aerospace Engineering, where they are overseen and in part funded by their parent Section.
AIAA has a number of Technical Committees on a large number of topics of interest to its members. One of these is the Space Colonization Technical Committee, which has the mission of identification and development of advanced concepts to support permanent human presence in space.
