The Mars Society is an international space advocacy group dedicated to promoting a manned mission to Mars, its exploration, and settlement. The organization was founded in 1998 by Robert Zubrin and others.
Since the organization's founding, it has grown to over 4,000 members in more than 50 countries. The Mars Society currently runs the Mars Desert Research Station which is located near Hanksville, Utah. This location presents many geographic features similar to those found on the red planet, allowing investigation of living techniques similar to those used on Mars.
The Mars Society also hosts an annual conference known as the International Mars Society Convention, being hosted since its founding.
